jacob and rose

Dear Drs Mussalli and Worth,

We are the happy and lucky parents of twins born on August 4 at 38.5 weeks, Jacob Alan (6 lbs 2 oz) and Jacqueline Rose (4 lbs 13 oz).

We thank you all for your wonderful help.

Drs Mussalli and Worth at Village Obstetrics helped me have the VBAC I was hoping for.

We’re all healthy. Rose who was small but perfect is gaining about an ounce a day. Nursing both is going well and I feel great two weeks later.

Deepest thanks to you and all who work with you!

Yours,

N & R & J, Jacob & Rose

september 2009 practice statistics

VOb by the Numbers, 10/20/08 to 9/9/09 (228 deliveries)

We believe that our minimally invasive and old fashioned approach to obstetrical care allows the vast majority of our patients an unhurried labor and a vaginal delivery. This trend is demonstrated most clearly by the following statistics: 8% c-section rate when scheduled s-sections excluded; 10% operative delivery rate (forceps), 90% version success rate, 93% vbac success rate (one patient needed a cesarean hysterectomy for severe bleeding. Thankfully both mother and baby are safe and healthy.)

Cesarean sections: 22% rate overall
• patients in labor: 8% (excludes scheduled c/s)
• scheduled*: 15% (scheduled c/s as percent of all deliveries)

Vaginal deliveries: 88% rate overall
• spontaneous: 60%
• forceps: 10%
• twins: 2 patients
• vacuum: 1 patient
• vbac**: 14 patients

Other statistics
• vbac success: 93%
• cesarean hysterectomy-bleeding with attempted vbac: 1 patient
• twin vbac: 1 patient
• version success: 90%
• versions: 19 patients
• routine episiotomies: 0%
• labor induction (medically necessary or elective) 16%
• deliveries by Dr. Mussalli or Dr. Worth: 96%

Notes:
* scheduled cesarean sections for obstructing fibroids, prior uterine surgery, placenta previa, prior sacrum fracture, malpresentation, malpresenting twins or elective repeat.
** vbac includes 3 forcep deliveries

lorenzo

Dear Dr. Worth, Dr. Mussalli and Brooke,

J, my mother, Lorenzo and I wanted to thank you all very much for the wonderful care you took of Lorenzo and I during my pregnancy, labor and birth. It was not the birth that I had originally imagined, but thanks to your care, patience and attention I was able to avoid a c-section delivery and Lorenzo was born very healthy – which is what matters the most. He is growing and changing by the day (I can't believe he is almost 1 month already!) and we are sooo in love with him. I am very happy that we were educated on the options available to us so that throughout the labor we were able to make decisions and be flexible with our original birth plan- thank you for taking the time to explain our options and offer support and advice throughout the labor and birth. I will never forget Lorenzo’s birth- the three of you worked so well together- as a seamless team- and I felt really lucky to have you all there. You are all very incredible people- and we are very grateful. Please extend our thanks to the nurses and staff at Saint Vincents- they were amazing- I can’t thank them enough for their care and attention throughout our stay- a friend had told me that the nurses make St Vincents- and she was correct- our stay would not have been the same without them. Also please thank Lourdes and Leanne who were wonderful and supportive during all of my visits to the office- including the last one when my labor was already in progress. I am attaching some pictures we took during our stay at St Vincent's.

Warmest Regards.

st. vincent's offers labor pools on trial basis

We have very exciting news. As part of developing a comprehensive platform of comfort and support measures we are so pleased to announce that St Vincent's now offers labor pools on a limited basis.

Birthing rooms #4 and #5 currently can accomodate the pool. The pools are available only for labor pain relief and NOT for underwater birth. Certain other situations might also prevent you from being able to use the pools.

The pool provides a highly effective relaxation measure to assist those interested in having an unmedicated labor.

Here are preliminary guidelines:

We cannot guarantee that the birthing rooms 4 or 5 will be available. They may be in use by other patients when you are in labor.

We require that patients hire a doula who is able to setup and take down the pool.

Please bring large towels or a bathrobe for your warmth and comfort.

The following three steps need to be done at the Village Obstetrics office in advance:

1) A $100 fee is to be paid by check to cover the cost of using the pool, pool set-up and take down equipment as well as the disposable tub liner. Please call Leanne for details -- 212 627 9556. If you end up not having the tub set-up we will provide you with an immediate and full refund.

2) We ask that you sign a statement that you understand the following: A) underwater birth is not permitted, B) you will follow our intermittent monitoring guidelines of 30 minutes on monitor following any 30 minute maximum unmonitored period, C) you will exit the pool if your nurse, doctor or midwife feels that increased monitoring or other measures are needed, D) only one other person is allowed in pool with you and that person must wear bathing suit.

We are so excited to offer pools and hope they help you achieve a birth you will never forget. We look forward to expanding the availability of the pools as well as other innovative programs as St. Vincent's transforms into the premier birthing center in New York.

tubs for easing labor pain

Hello Doctors Worth & Mussalli

I wanted to send you a quick note to thank you both immensely for the safe and happy delivery of our beautiful daughter Kama on Wednesday 29th.

Both of you allowed me to achieve the labor that I wanted - with the tub and without drugs or tearing. I really am very grateful to you both for everything. Especially for the efforts on organizing the tub at St Vincents - it definitely assisted my labor to be quicker and less painful.

You have both been wonderful throughout my pregnancy for both E and myself - always available to answer questions and help us fulfil our birthing dreams.

If you need me to do a testimonial about the tub, or talk to anyone who is interested in the future - I'm more than happy to do so.

Once again, a big thank you to you both.

Regards, L

Dear Dr M & Dr W,

I want to pass on these pictures of our daughter, Ulrika, who seems to be adjusting very well to her new surroundings. We are both so grateful for the excellent care that we received with your practice; the outcome couldn't be better!

Thanks, I

Dr. Worth,

Thanks for everything on the 17th. M, N, J and I are all adjusting well. L&D and my postpartum experience at St. Vincent's were great. Here's a picture for you.

See you soon. Fondly, R

Dear Dr. Worth & Dr. Mussalli,

Thank you for the opportunity to have the type of birth I was told was not possible for me. I'm so glad I switched to Village Obstetrics. Dr. Worth, I continue to think back to Jeremy's birthday, and will forever be amazed and grateful for your talent with the delivery of my son. It truly was the best day of my life. Of course, he is the cutest thing ever!! ;) Here are some photos we took at home one week later.

Most sincerely,

M, I, and J
