minimally invasive obstetrics brings results

We have named what we do "Minimally Invasive Obstetrics" and our results continue to surprise us.

The Village Obstetrics philosophy is simple. We respect and enjoy our patients. We feel privileged every day (and often every night!) to practice medicine. Our skills honed over years of experience and thousands of deliveries are what we offer with a smile and a calm confidence. We care and it shows!

We are proud of our results. Our mothers and babies are healthy. Our partners and dads are delighted. We have helped many achieve the birth they wanted. We don't do unnecessary cesareans or routine episiotomies. We rarely induce labor. We always offer vbac whenever its appropriate and our versions to turn breech babies are remarkably successful.

my girls and beatrice

Hi Dr. Worth,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the smooth delivery last week, despite all of my indecisive thoughts about the whole thing. I really appreciated you encouraging D and me to go with our guts even though it created some drama at the hospital. We are doing great, Beatrice is such a fun addition to the family.

Thank again.

a great experience at st. vincent's

Even though this was my first baby, by the time I took the hospital tour at St. Vincent's, I was already familiar with a few of the post-partum wards in the City. I spent time last fall at both Lenox Hill and St. Vincent's, where Dr. Worth admitted me for treatment of hyperemesis.

D and I were both really impressed with St. Vincent's. We felt that everyone there spent more time with us and seemed more engaged in my care. So we had no reservations about following Dr. Worth down to St. Vincent's when she joined Dr. Mussalli to form Village Obstetrics.

Our 28-hour labor and delivery only confirmed how wonderful the doctors and nurses at St. Vincent's are. The labor and delivery nurses were so attentive and knowledgeable -- their experience was especially valuable when it came time to push -- and Dr. Mussalli and the anesthesiologist gave us great advice about pain relief. The post-partum nurses again took great care of me, and the pediatric staff were wonderful with the baby.

Thanks to everyone at Village Obstetrics and St. Vincent's for helping us bring Robyn into the world.

Regards, R & D

dea and don

Dr. Worth,

I went to Lebanon to join my husband on December 07 and came back December 08. Both of the kids are doing well. Dea turned 6 years on March 5 and Don turned 18 months same day. Even after 6 years giving birth to my daughter as well as 18 months giving birth to my son we feel that without you it was impossible. With your integrity, kindness, abilities well managing during both pregnancies you made me feel incredible and made our dream come true. Smooth pregnancies and deliveries made possible only by you. There is nothing in the world that can describe how blessed and thankful we feel first to have a chance and meet you and then to have you be part of my pregnancies and deliveries. Both Dea and Don join our family from the hands of Dr. Worth.

Talk to you, S

Dear Dr. Worth.......

I cannot thank you enough for everything you did to help me have as natural of a labor & delivery as possible.

I am so thrilled that we moved with you from the old practice to your new venture, Village Obstetrics, with Dr. Mussalli. My pregnancy was fairly uneventful but, because I read a lot about natural childbirth, I decided to hire a doula and was very pleased to discover that the doulas I selected had actually worked with you before!

My labor, as it turned out, was very long and very tiring (36 hours from the start of serious contractions until the delivery) and, as promised, you allowed me to labor at home as long as possible without any unnecessary intervention. I was so thankful to not be fearful of the hospital experience because I so firmly trusted that you would help me follow my written birth plan as long as possible so long as the baby was fine. In the end, the doula/doctor interaction was so nurturing and supportive that I knew, once you began to suggest different options for the progression of labor, I should begin to feel open to re-evaluating my birth plan.

After about 24+ hours (and having seen you at the hospital twice during that period for monitoring), we settled into the labor & delivery room for a long night, during which you graciously hosted all of the questions and concerns from my family. The remainder of the labor continued to be quite tiring and challenging but you allowed me to carry on, despite so little progress. I am certain, had I been anywhere else with any other doctor, I would have ended my birth story with a c-section. However because my doula, Sarah, had worked with you many times in the past, I knew that when you were suggesting pitocin/epidural/stadol I should consider these options, at that point in the delivery, as helpful tools to further progress instead of fearing them. I was strongly against any drug/intervention but, in the end, because of fatigue and slllloooooow progress, I was given Stadol...(which, to my groggy recollection, only made me feel more tired). Next, several hours later, I was given an epidural but, alas, my girl still didn’t want to join us!

You were PATIENT and so supportive of my wishes and I cannot thank you enough. Your “bedside manner” is very gentle and trustworthy, which makes relaxing in a somewhat sterile environment possible. When I was finally fully dilated and ready to push, you encouraged my husband to experience the process with you which turned out to be something he was very thankful for — you explained everything that was happening so that I could, despite the discomfort, truly live in the details of the moment. I am very grateful.

When our daughter was finally born, we were so elated to have the whole labor process over with that we forgot to ask what “type” of baby we had.....until you finally asked us if we wanted to know the sex of the baby! It was a very funny moment! We are so blessed and grateful to have had you with us. We’ll be back!

Best and kind regards,
N & M

ona mia

Thank you Dr. Worth,

You've been the best ob/gyn an expectant mother could hope for. O and I are both very happy that we stuck with you. Your calm, openness, and general advice have made this, our first pregnancy, an incredible experience. The days leading up to this moment have been incredible. Now I know it is possible to give birth without an epidural. I thank you with all my heart for being an integral part of bringing Ona into our lives. (P.S. Dr. Mussalli rocks!)

Again thank you, E, O & O

working with doulas

Dear Dr. Worth & Dr. Mussalli,

I'm N's doula. Dr. Worth when I met you at Realbirth last year what really stood out to me was when you spoke about delivering babies you held up your hands and said "I don't know why I have such a low c-section rate I think its because of my hands." While that isn't verbatim it stuck with me. When I met N and she was uncomfortable with her provider those words made me think you would be a great provider for a VBAC. As someone who isn't trained medically, I was inspired to hear a doctor talk about delivery as an "art."

N is so lucky to have had you both and I feel so lucky to witness this birth. I was able to reassure her that "it" was taking so long because no one was intervening. As long as she was doing OK and her baby was doing Ok she was on track to have a vaginal birth. After the birth N told me that her birth felt not only like a physical journey but an emotional one. I believe that your care gave her the time for her to discover her potential and have the birth she wanted.

In December I had a student who was having an awful time with her provider I gave her your information. She wrote me this..."I can't say enough good about Dr. Worth and the practice, Village Obstetrics. She and her partner Dr. Mussalli, who is the head of OB at St. Vincent's, provided really personalized care throughout the end of my pregnancy. I felt REALLY taken care of and ironically didn't ever feel the need to pull out my birth plan after our initial discussions (I have a theory that sometimes the birth plan is a defensive move when people don't feel comfortable with their provider; it was certainly true in my case)." And this: "I think they're really onto something at Village OB, and I have nothing but great things to say about St. Vincent's." I couldn't agree more. Have a wonderful weekend.

Like many of Dr. Worth’s patients, I transferred to Village Obstetrics late in my pregnancy, at 34 weeks. After a dissatisfying appointment with one of the doctors in my OB’s megapractice, both a doula and a midwife recommended her to me as a physician friendly to a low-intervention birth.

I met frequently with both Dr. Worth and Dr. Mussalli, who have a truly collaborative practice, and my husband H and I marveled each time at the level of personal care we received (I’d never exchanged emails with my doctor before!). After a couple blood pressure false alarms in labor & delivery, we also got a good first impression of the kindness and care of the staff at St. Vincent’s.

At my 38-week appointment on Tuesday, February 10, I told Dr. Worth I had begun having intense pelvic pressure, so she asked if I wanted her to examine me. To my surprise, I was 2-3 cm dilated and 50% effaced. That night I started having my first “real” contractions, though they were fairly irregular. I told my husband the next morning I had a hunch I would go into serious labor that evening, so he arranged to stay home with me.

We walked to a diner to have breakfast, timing my contractions, and at noon we called my mom, who was planning to drive 8 hours from Virginia to be with us during the birth.

All day the contractions intensified while we watched episodes of Arrested Development and I took baths and finished packing my hospital bag. I called Dr. Worth to let her know things were moving, though we still didn’t know how long it might be until we would need to come to the hospital.

As night fell, it became increasingly clear that my hunch had been right, as the contractions got closer together and more painful and required a lot more focus to get through them. Harry was a godsend, providing encouragement and support, giving counter pressure to my lower back and timing the contractions. When my mom arrived at 10:30p.m., my contractions were 3-4 minutes apart.

We sent Mom off to rest, and my contractions continued to intensify. The contractions were getting harder, and they became more and more frequent – until they seemed to be stalling, and became sporadic.

By 2 a.m. I was feeling drained. We didn’t know where we were in the labor process. We decided to call Dr. Mussalli, who was on call, and he said we should head to the hospital.

When I got admitted at 3 a.m., I was 5 cm dilated and 70% effaced. Our nurse, Lisa, administered a dose of Stadol, which Dr. Worth and I had agreed would be a good choice since I didn’t want an epidural.

Despite my very long prelabor, active labor went quickly, especially after my water broke with a huge gush at 4:30 a.m.

When Dr. Worth arrived, I was exhausted and in the worst part of my labor. She suggested I try pushing once, and from there I would either continue pushing, or could consider an epidural.

I put my chin to my chest and pushed as hard as I could. My husband and mother were by my side, and I could feel the energy in the room starting to jump with nurses gathering around the bed to help.

Within a couple of pushes, my husband leaned towards me, gripped my hand, and said, “I can see her head!”

It was only minutes after that our baby girl, Iris Ellington, came into the world. With the help of the wonderful and supportive nursing staff of St. Vincent’s and Doctors Worth and Mussalli, she was born a petite but healthy 5 lbs. 13 oz. and was 20 inches long.

Because I had a vaginal delivery, didn’t tear, and was feeling well, I was able to leave the hospital after only one night. It felt good to bring the newest member of our family home so soon and so safely.

milo's birth

As a photographer i decided that i would take pictures of the birth of my baby. As i had decided that my husband would not be present, my friend Patty would be, she has been a nurse at st vincent in the birthing department for over 20 years i thought that there wouldn't be a better coach. So it was her me and a wonderful team of nurses and doctors just as i wanted it a team of people who know what they are doing. I also didn't want to film or photograph myself or the baby coming out i beleive those memory are better kept in my head rather than with a not so nice visual. But i did want to show the point of view of the future mom. There is no picture of Dr Mussalli who was there for most of it but every time he came in the room the contractions would stop so it became a woman story. Here are some pics i took, keep in mind that between the drugs and the pain my head was not always focusing on the technical side of it, i will change that if i do it again. I want to thank everyone involved it was a wonderful experience and if you give birth at st vincent i hope you get my team and Patty who is back in that department as a nurse. GP
